Eva Martin, Audit Graduate, Wellington

I joined Baker Tilly Staples Rodway Wellington at the beginning of 2024 and despite still being part-way through my studies, they were very accommodating and helped me to balance work and study.

There are many perks to working in the smallest Baker Tilly office. Perhaps what I appreciate the most is the genuine sense of community where everyone, regardless of service line, knows each other and gets along. I feel comfortable working closely with more senior, CA-qualified members of the team and this has helped to accelerate my learning and development. As soon as grads join the company, we’re given the opportunity to be involved in valued work and figure things out without feeling time pressured or micro-managed. We’re supported through the whole process, from emailing the client for information to compiling GST returns and financial statements.

Katherine Beeson, Audit Graduate, Auckland

My journey with Baker Tilly Staples Rodway began as an intern during the ’24-‘25 summer. I was part of the first intake to experience the firm’s new rotation structure, which gave me exposure to both the Audit and Business Advisory service lines. This opportunity was a key reason I was drawn to Baker Tilly, and I’ve never looked back!

After completing my conjoint degree in Accounting and Earth Science at the University of Auckland, I was delighted to accept a graduate offer in audit. Baker Tilly was incredibly accommodating, allowing me to start mid-year while still providing the training I needed to head out to client sites during the busy season. In this short time, I’ve grown both professionally and personally. The inclusive culture encourages balance and connection; from playing football with colleagues after work to contributing to meaningful initiatives. I’m particularly proud to represent graduates on the ESG Committee, where I can combine my passion for sustainability with my science background to make a positive impact.

What stands out most about Baker Tilly Staples Rodway is its people and culture. Getting to experience being out at client sites and building professional relationships with my peers and the clients has been beneficial for both my professional and personal skills.

Being a mid-tier firm, Baker Tilly Staples Rodway emphasises its focus on culture and collaboration. I’ve experienced it through being able to approach my seniors, members of other departments, managers and even the directors without fear to discuss working matters and in getting to know them personally.

There is no expectation of constant overtime work, which aligned with my desires when I was searching and applying for graduate roles.

The training opportunities have been excellent. Between formal sessions, on-the-job learning and helpful feedback from managers and colleagues, I’ve quickly built confidence in my technical skills. Working with a variety of clients has also given me a clearer understanding of how the theory I learned at university applies in practice.

Mitch Howe, BAS Graduate, Auckland

Kia ora, I’m Mitch. I studied Accounting and Finance at Victoria. Like most final-year students, I hit that “what’s next?” moment pretty hard. I knew I wanted a role where I could grow fast, work with a variety of clients and still feel like part of a team – not just a number.

When I started researching firms, Baker Tilly Staples Rodway stood out. It had the reach and reputation of a global network, but the culture felt genuinely supportive and down-to-earth. That balance really mattered to me.

The recruitment process was clear and structured: An online application, psychometric testing, a chat over the phone and then a final interview. It sounds intense, but the team was approachable throughout, which made a big difference. Fast forward to now, I’m in the Business Advisory team in Auckland, and the best part has been the people. From day one, I had a network around me, a dedicated buddy, mentor, managers and even partners who were happy to help and share advice.

There’s always someone to bounce ideas off and that support has given me the confidence to take ownership of my work while knowing the team’s got my back. Plus, the training and early client exposure have made the learning curve exciting, not scary.

Nathan Proctor, BAS Graduate, Tauranga

Baker Tilly Staples Rodway Tauranga initially employed me in a part-time role while I was studying at university in June 2023. This opportunity has given me real-world business experience while providing the freedom to manage my work, study and social life. Balance is an integral part of our culture, and the team has been more than supportive of my journey as a high-performance athlete. The directors are passionate about the firm and the people who work here. They have helped me tailor a unique pathway for career development. As I have no tertiary accounting study experience, they derived a number of options before supporting my enrolment in a master’s degree that will also lead to a Chartered Accounting qualification. My colleagues have built a supportive working atmosphere that created a smooth transition into the professional environment while also encouraging personal growth and long-term success outside the office.

I am privileged to learn from and work alongside intelligent and experienced individuals who are among the best in our industry. I have personally been tasked with an appropriate level of responsibility that has challenged me and driven contextual learning. With a range of quality resources and experience on hand, we are well equipped to meet our clients’ accounting needs while going beyond their service expectations. I look forward to growing my relationship with Baker Tilly Staples Rodway at both client and firm level in the future.

Stepping into the real competitive world after university felt incredibly daunting, but joining Baker Tilly Staples Rodway made that transition smoother than I ever imagined. From the moment I walked in for my interview, I sensed that Baker Tilly genuinely values people for who they are. The interview felt more like a relaxed conversation than a formal assessment, which immediately put me at ease.

But what truly sets it apart for me is its incredible support system and culture. Since day one, everyone has been very welcoming and supportive. Every new graduate is paired with a buddy and a manager, creating a strong foundation of guidance and mentorship. Whether it’s work-related queries or navigating workplace systems, there’s always someone to reach out to. Sidilse Vela Gurovic, BAS Graduate, Wellington

I joined Baker Tilly Staples Rodway in late 2024 as an intern through the CA ANZ Achiever Programme, working part-time while in my final year of study at Victoria University of Wellington. I was initially interested in Baker Tilly because of the clear pathways for future career development, including CA and training, which aligned with my long-term goals.

What made me stay, though, was the culture and the people. From day one, I felt genuinely welcomed and supported. The work is challenging, but never overwhelming, and I really value the positive and constructive feedback I receive. There’s always someone willing to help, explain, or guide me through new tasks, which has made the transition from university to full-time work much smoother.
