A day in the life of an Auckland Business Advisory Services grad

Ryan Verney illustrates a day in his life as an Auckland business advisory graduate. A keen football player, he loves the work-life balance and says, “every day brings something new”.

5.15am: It's Ryan here! First, my alarm goes off, signalling the start of my day. I gather all my football gear and head out for training.

6.15am: I arrive at the training ground. After a quick team meeting, we start training at 7am and finish around 8.30am.

9am: After a productive training session, I switch gears and head to the office. Thanks to the firm’s flexible hours, I’m able to balance my football dreams with my work responsibilities seamlessly. From day one, my colleagues have been incredibly supportive, which allows me to focus on both football and work without feeling overwhelmed. Today, I’m tackling the monthly reports for one of my clients. Working closely and consistently with clients not only builds great relationships but also creates an ideal environment for continuous learning.

11am: Every six weeks, I catch up with my director over coffee to discuss how things are going. We talk about everything from my workflow and workload to maintaining a good work-life balance and even how my football is progressing. It’s refreshing to have such a personal relationship with senior management. These conversations make asking questions and learning from them so much easier.

12.30pm: Today, the graduates have a scheduled lunchtime training session, complete with a catered lunch! We usually have these trainings once or twice a month and they really help sharpen our technical skills, giving us tools to apply in our daily work.

2pm: My manager has assigned me a new task, so we meet to discuss the client and go over the handover. After the meeting, I dive straight into the work. Whenever I have questions, there’s always someone on the team ready to help. My buddy, especially, goes out of their way to support me whenever I need guidance.

3.30pm: We have our weekly sub-team meeting this afternoon. Our department is split into four smaller teams, which allows us to work more closely with a few directors and managers to maintain an efficient workflow. These meetings are a great way to check in on everyone’s progress, share interesting client stories and have a bit of informal conversation.

4pm: Back at my desk, we’ve received some supporting documents from a client. I spend the rest of the day working on this client. The variety of clients we handle keeps things interesting and ensures that every day brings something new.

5.30pm: As my workday wraps up, I’m grateful for the firm’s strong emphasis on work-life balance. Being able to start my day later allows me to pursue football in the mornings, leaving my evenings free to unwind and recharge for the next day.
